Dear Public Project

In Collaboration with Latitude Artists Community

In May 2009, the Dear Public Project and Latitude Artists Community in Lexington, Kentucky teamed up to create a public performance for the Lexington Art League. The Latitude Artists community serves all people -- with an emphasis on those thought by some to have a disability -- by creating meaningful, inclusive community interactions which allow participating artists to contribute culturally and politically to the life of their community.

The creators of Latitude and the Dear Public Project decided to collaborate to use the Dear Public Project as a tool to bring attention to the voices of individuals that may otherwise remain unheard. The participants include artists from Latitude, individuals with disabilities, and mostly permanently institutionalized individuals, which includes the participants from nursing homes that the creators visited.

The responses were placed into a booklet to be dispersed to the participants and the readers for the performance. The performance was held May 22nd at the Lexington Art League. Visitors to the exhibition were asked to participate in the performance by sitting in a circle as a surrogate reader to read about the perfect day of someone who could never be present.
